Once the units are plugged in, a voice guide prompts you to download the Nightingale app. The app performs a quick scan for each unit and then offers to connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Then it runs some questions by you to help it optimize for your unique situation. These include inquiries about whether it’s an adult or youth bedroom and what’s in it as surfaces such as hardwood flooring, carpet, drapes, and glass will all affect sound absorption differently. Lastly, it asks about any medical conditions, such as tinnitus or snoring, and if the room is a hospital room.
Nightingale is literally just two smart plugs outfitted with color-changing night-light LEDs and speakers. They connect to the related iPhone app over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth (there's currently no Android support). Given its price, I’d have to say its appeal is likely limited to smart-home enthusiasts who want a more automated option.

White noise and nature sounds are specifically tuned to the acoustics of your bedroom to mask disruptive noises. Right, now, you can’t do much controlling the Nightingale with or Google Home, just turn it on or off or adjust what sound it’s playing. The ability to have the devices give you alerts with IFTTT is pretty interesting and turns it into more than just a noise machine. The rain alerts weren’t that helpful; though we live in a very rainy area, we only actually heard it once over the several weeks we tested the Nightingale. But with IFTTT, you can set up an alert for when a Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide. Thankfully these haven’t been put to the test, but giving the detector an alarm boost is certainly an added bonus.
It uses a proprietary sound curve, called sound blankets, that are optimized for each user’s room acoustics. With two independent units, each with two speakers, Nightingale immerses the entire room in a comfortable, non-localized sound blanket. The Nightingale units have built-in LED night lights. The light color choice and intensity can be controlled by an accompanying iOS or Androidapp.

If you’re a smart-home enthusiast, the Nightingale sleep system is an elegant solution for blocking unwanted noise in your bedroom, but it’s not necessarily better than less-expensive white-noise machines. I’m not convinced you couldn’t replicate the effects of the Nightingale by simply buying two, lower-cost sound machines, but it does have some smart capabilities. If you can’t have one more thing on your nightstand, it offers an elegant solution. Next, you set the devices’ location in the app and add some descriptions of the room .
(A single unit version is available for $149.) These plug into any 110-volt outlet. As each unit includes two three-pronged plugs, you can still run your lamps or appliances from that wall receptacle. Together, the two units are designed to cover up to a 300-square-foot bedroom.
Lakeshore is a blend of crickets, birds, lapping water, and other forest-type noises that I found quite soothing. Crickets sounded more like a synth patch than a nature recording. I spent the first few nights using the sound-masking white noise setting, which sounds exactly like TV static. With one unit on either side of the bed, it did indeed feel like being wrapped in sound.
The smartphone app also lets you choose from 15 separate sound-masking variations and several nature sounds. You’ll likely want to try all the sounds, masking variations, and sound intensities to find which work best for you. As you probably already know, getting better sleep can be a big challenge. Nightingale rises to the occasion, improving sleep quality by masking common indoor and outdoor noises. The noise masking is smart, customized, and effective like no other consumer white noise machine. Less noisy disruptions means better, deeper sleep.

I created an IFTTT rule that closed a window shade whenever the Nightingale nightlight turned on. You could create additional rules for all of the smart shades and lights in your home -- or even adjust your Nest thermostat's temperature based on Nightingale's status. I also asked my parents to try out Nightingale for one night, since my dad has tinnitus. We went through the same configuration process at their house, except the app selected the custom "Tinnitus Blanket" for them to try.
